We’ll that’s how I feel about some of the people jumping to conclusions and shooting their mouth off with regards to Google’s most recent algrythmic update.
Of all the information I’ve read and heard lately, I could count on one hand those who actually know what they’re talking about. Once you’ve been around the traps for a while it’s actually pretty easy to spot those who speak from experience compared to those faking it till they make it.
Now the dust is starting to settle, I thought I best share with you everything I know about the most recent Panda update and Google banning blog networks. I want to share:
– which blog networks got hit.
– the truth about the “unnatural linking” email from Google Webmaster tools.
– the difference between being penalised or just had your links discounted
– what to do if you have a 5 page penalty applied.
And what you should do moving forward to ensure your SEO and online marketing is rock solid.

Matt and the web spam team have been sharpening their samurais for a while. Wear some decent shoes and don’t leave your feet exposed =]
I forgot to mention… moving forward if you’re going to continue to use blog networks – you’ll need to pick them very wisely. It’s also my suggestion to only use them heavily on your feeder sites (especially web2.0 properties) and if you really must link to your money site… be sure to make it a small percentage of your overall link profile.

Recently @SMX, Matt Cutts did mention this was going to happen and also made a point of over optimized sites. I think instead of community based link building, for too long people have been utilizing blog networks.
I think this is a game changer and I am glad we are more content driven for most of our clients and not on blog networks as such.

Well my sites stayed at #1 or some not quite there moved up.
Quality over quantity.
I personally have stayed away from blog networks..almost spam
junk, and got worse and worse.
Kind of like Panda on Ezine. They got worse and worse and had to clean up their act.
I love press releases and google news and quality content. Google sets you up as an authority. Do you think Google News and You Tube will move you up. Plus people love videos
Just think Quality over quantity and spread a big wide net.

I’ve always been into diversity — anchor texts, WP and non-WP sites, and other link sources. The same thing with dribbling a basketball. You need to vary your moves otherwise you’ll be left standing with no ball at all.

Heya, my name is Mark and the rankings dropped a little initially, as did the traffic, both now recovering…
I got the advice to sign out of google analytics as well as webmasters to “not give them more information than necessary”.
What’s your take on that, and if I do, where can I find another service that tells me things like numbers of visits, bounce rate etc?

@Don press releases still rock… typically speaking anything that costs a little time or money is always a good idea since spammers can’t be bothered. That creates a good opportunity for legitimate marketers like you and me 🙂
As for video, don’t get me started on video 😉 I think it’s the future of the web and suggest you dive head first into it. All boats float on a rising tide.
@Mark As long as you’re not up to anything too sneaky with your sites usually Google Analytics (in my opinion) is fine.
That said, I personally don’t use it for all my sites – eg. feeder sites and ones where I’m doing testing.
Don’t get too caught up in hiding from Google with unique class C ip addresses, private registras, and custom analytics – your time is better spent delivering a quality product/service that people love. Do that and you’re more than 80% of the way serving what Google really wants anyway.

Hi Dave,
I read that Google is dropping blogs or websites on the rankings because of the sneaky features they have, like too much sales pitching. Do posting too many opt-in forms in the site considered a sneaky feature? or pitching sales directly? Hoping to be enlightened on this one.
