6 years ago, I flew to detroit for Jeff Johnson’s $10,000 Traffic King Pro Program. It was an awesome workshop and very much on the bleeding edge of internet marketing. At the time Jeff and his partners were building out massive blog networks and dominating just about every industry they chose.
This ultimately lead to building my own network of 583+ domains which later evolved into theSEOmethod.com .
Behind the scenes I met Dori Friend, one of Jeff’s partner’s, and almost instantly clicked with her. She’s an ex-Apple designer turned internet marketing. Other than popping her head up at Jeff’s and later at Yanik‘s conference she’s pretty much “underground”. She’s out in the real world applying high level SEO strategies to great effect.
Having always loved what she does, I thought it was time to track her down. I spent the better part of 6 months arranging this catchup. A self confessed reculse, and living out in the middle of nowhere, she was hard to lock down.
That said, I’m happy to report persistence won over resistance and I finally recorded a new call for you all about what it takes to win the war of SEO.

Hi David,
I really enjoyed the interview. Some of the Dori says are spot on!
Did a RT , big thanks,
Andi
Powerful audio.
You’re reading this, right?
You need to totally check out the Dori Friend download here.
It’ll change your business.
Hey Will? what’s the link? nothing seemed to come through?
Cheers
Dave
Great interview! I’m not really very familiar with Dori, probably because she prefers living under a rock than to promote herself as an expert. I understand the power of having your own network, but for most people this is not an option. Two reasons that I can immediately think of: 1. lack of funding and 2. lack of time.
As for me, I would rather rent someone else’s network than create my own. 🙂
Hey MJ,
Thanks for the post… Yeah Dori’s pretty underground. As you know, for me, I think it’s important to have both. Create your own mini network, with real domains and web2.0 properties, and rent other peoples.

Perhaps start there?

Ah the low-key Dori… heard a lot about her in the past, but never really knew anything about her. The audio was a real eye-opener… thanks for that!
What an excellent discussion. One which is resulting in taking a step back to re-evaluate how I am looking at my online business.
There are a lot of takeaways from this interview. Like always jumping into the shining stuff out there, believing in myths and not focusing on doing tests and applications.
I just find it really inspiring that people like her can be very generous about sharing her brains on what one can do better in making money online. Speaking of which, are there other guru interviews in the pipeline that I can listen to in the coming days? I would love to go back to check those out.
Hey Neil,
I’ve got a few killer ones planned. In fact, you might like to keep an eye on http://www.podcastinterviews.com

I have read some good reviews about the SEO Nitro, but man, it is way too expensive for the average IM guy, especially someone who is getting started like me.
Do you use it, Dave? Is it really a great network? But what I’m really interested is if you can recommend a more affordable alternative to Nitro.
Thanks.
Hi Ken,
Agreed SEO Nitro is a good network, that said it is definately on the high side. Another couple of networks you can look at are (perhaps the best value for money) include:

and

Hope that helps.

So you can succeed online even if you never create a visible authoritative identity. What I do gather from Dori is her intense focus on SEO. I wonder if the social marketing aspect of internet marketing still matters. If you’ve got a solid network for SEO, do you still need friends and followers in social networks to boost your business?
Hey Ninah,
In short, it’s always a good idea to have friends and followers in social networks.
Cheers
Dave
Hey Dave,
I did go to that site over the holidays and I really enjoyed listening to great minds. Will be going back soon to check out for new interviews.
Thanks for sharing that goldmine! 🙂
I agree with Dori that ‘focus’ is really simple word and yet very hard to do. Sometimes we tend to jump at every opportunity that comes our way and leaving behind the ones we have just started with. It is good to have someone to remind you to ‘focus’.
Building your own SEO network – interesting and sounds time-consuming. Does it cost much too?
